Disney’s 2025 live-action remake of Snow White became one of the most controversial film releases of the year, marked by debates over casting, political statements, and social media backlash. The controversy began as early as 2021 when Disney cast Rachel Zegler, an actress of Colombian descent, as the traditionally pale-skinned princess. While many praised the decision for promoting diversity, others criticized it, arguing that the role should be portrayed by someone who fit the original description from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Zegler defended her casting by emphasizing the character’s broad cultural appeal, particularly in Spanish-speaking countries. However, this early controversy was only the beginning of a much larger public debate surrounding the film.
As the film’s release approached, Zegler’s outspoken political views reignited the controversy. Her pro-Palestinian social media posts, particularly a “Free Palestine” message, coincided with Disney’s marketing campaign for Snow White. Reports surfaced that producer Marc Platt requested she remove political content to avoid further backlash. The situation escalated when co-star Gal Gadot, known for her Israeli military background, allegedly received death threats linked to Zegler’s stance, prompting Disney to heighten security at promotional events. The company attempted to control the narrative by limiting press interactions and scaling back traditional red-carpet interviews.
Industry reactions were divided. Jonah Platt, the son of Snow White’s producer, criticized Zegler, suggesting her activism negatively affected the film’s performance. On the other hand, actor Pedro Pascal voiced his support for Zegler, calling her an “icon,” which in turn sparked further debate. Meanwhile, John Lennon’s son, Sean Ono Lennon, referred to Zegler as a “spoiled, ungrateful brat” for her comments about the film and its original storyline. The heightened discourse over her role and personal beliefs ultimately overshadowed the film itself.
The cumulative effect of these controversies impacted Snow White’s box office performance. While Disney attempted to shift focus to the film’s content, analysts believe the negative publicity played a significant role in its underwhelming reception. The situation highlighted ongoing tensions in Hollywood regarding representation, the influence of actors’ personal beliefs on their careers, and the ever-growing impact of social media on film marketing. In the end, Snow White became less of a fairytale comeback for Disney and more of a cautionary tale about the intersection of entertainment and politics in the digital age.
