Beauty and the Beast: Animated vs. Live Action

BY ISABELLA BEELER

“Beauty and the Beast” is one of my favorite Disney movies. I recently wanted to watch both of them and noticed some differences. Some stuff changed and some stuff was added. They are both great movies, but with their own spin to it.

The first difference is Belle’s first few interactions with Gaston. In the animation, Gaston takes her book and throws it in the mud. He asks “How can you read this? There’s no pictures,” and tells her she needs to get her head out of the books. In the live action, he seems nicer because he asked what kind of book she is reading. He still drops it in the mud. Also, the iconic scene where Belle throws Gaston out of her house and he falls into the mud is not even in the live action.

Another difference is the scene where Maurice gets lost in the woods and finds Beast’s castle. In the animation, Maurice tells his horse to take a short cut. Then they run into wolves and the horse leaves him. Then he knocks and goes inside the castle and the living objects help him get warmed up and Beast gets upset. In the live action, they take a different path because a tree was blocking the other. The horse never left Maurice until he got locked up. The Beast didn’t get that upset that Maurice warmed up, but that he took a rose from his garden. He called him a thief.

One add on to the live action is a song called “Evermore” sung by the Beast after he lets Belle go. He sings about how she will never leave him, even when she walks away. It is a really great song, and I’m glad that they added it. They also added on other songs, too. Another add on to the live action is where Belle and Beast travel to the Paris of Belle’s childhood. She finds out what happened to her mom, and Beast realizes Maurice is not a thief. That new scene also has a song.

Some other stuff that is different is Maurice and Gaston’s relationship. In the animation, Gaston says that he is crazy and tries to put him in an insane asylum unless Belle marries him. In the live action, Gaston tries to kill him and when Maurice tells on him is when he almost goes to the insane asylum. Another thing that is an add on to the live action is more scenes with the Entancress. She is in the beginning of both movies, but is in more scenes later in the live action.

As you can see, there are many differences between the live action and animated movies. I really like that there are add ons, too. Even though there are differences, it is the same general story. I think that both movies are great. The animation is classic and the live action has great additions.
