The Great Snowstorm

BY ISABELLA BEELER

Last week, the midwest had one of the biggest snowfalls in a long time called “Winter Storm Cora”. It canceled a lot of activities for a whole week. The snow was really deep. Before the snow, a wintry mix coated the roads in ice. Some days that week dropped down into the negatives.

On Saturday, January 4, is when it started to get icy. Some people were literally ice skating on the streets. Some people stayed in hotel rooms close to their work because it wasn’t safe to drive home. There were sad rumors that the roads were so slick that a car slid off the bridge into the Missouri River. Now I would like to take the time to tell you some skills, just in case something like that ever happens to you. If your car is underwater, you swim or crawl to the back of the car. Then pull the headrest out of your seat and punch the window. After, you swim up and to shore.

On Sunday, January 5, we woke up to a snowy, winter wonderland. When it was snowing, people were trying to have fun and enjoy their snow day. People went sledding and built snowmen. A big trend this year was jumping in the snow in shorts and sports bras. Besides playing in the snow, people rested too. Since school was canceled for a week, some schools now have makeup days and some schools did a little bit of virtual learning.

Last week was filled with snow and ice. It was and still is freezing, but the roads are better. The snow is finally starting to melt. Life is starting to go back to normal. I really enjoyed resting during the snow days. Be safe out there! More snow might be coming soon.
