Review: Inside Out Appeals to Teens

BY ISABELLA BEELER

Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2 released this summer on June 14. It just recently came out on Disney+. It is a sequel to Inside Out, nine years later. Kids born in the late 2000s, early 2010s, can really relate. They have grown up alongside the main girl named Riley in this movie.

The original Inside Out is about an 11-year-old girl named Riley growing up and changing. She moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. She has to deal with a new school, house, and hockey team. The movie looks into how people’s minds are and how they react to changes. Her main emotions are Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger and Fear. The movie is from their point of view. The movie is especially relevant to pre-teens as it goes into the emotion involving big changes in the lives of young people. The movie teaches that you have to feel sadness to feel real joy. That relates to everyone. A lot of people can learn good lessons from this movie.

Inside Out 2 is about Riley going through puberty. She gets new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui. She is also going into high school and participating in a hockey camp. She also finds out that her friends are changing schools. She is trying to be liked by her possibly new teammates and trying really hard to make the school hockey team. She ends up having a panic attack. A lot of teens can relate to that. It shows how anxiety affects us.

One lesson in the movie is when anxiety tries to control you, all you need is your joy. My joy is God. When I am anxious, I need Him. People on social media have been relating this movie to Christianity. It also talks about beliefs. What Riley believes, makes her who she is. She believes she is a good person, a good friend, strong, etc. Then anxiety comes along and she starts to believe that she is not good enough and other negative things. Then we learn that we are all those things and that’s okay. Now Riley believes that she is a good person, but makes mistakes.

This movie is more geared towards teens, but it is still a good movie for the whole family. Adults and kids might like the original Inside Out better. The story is more relatable to everyone. It’s about joy and sadness. Inside Out 2 goes deep into detail with what teens experience. Teens were also born in the late 2000s, early 2010s. They were close to Riley’s age in the 1st one when it came out and are now teens like Riley when the 2nd one is coming out. They grew up with Riley. However, this movie does a great job at showing what anxiety is like. Anxiety affects

a lot of people. Even though teens are the general audience, a lot of other people can relate to it too.

Overall: 8/10
