Advice for Freshmen

BY ISABELLA BEELER

Transitioning from middle school to high school can be overwhelming and challenging. Some parts are the same and some are different. It is also hard going to a new school because it is a new and unfamiliar place. I’m going to give some advice on how to navigate the school, how to be on time, and lunch schedule.

First, let’s begin with the school layout. The school has three floors. The room numbers on each floor start with the level they are on. On the first floor, all the room numbers are in the 100s. On the second floor, all the rooms are in the 200s. On the third floor, all the rooms are in the 300s. When a new hallway starts, there are the room numbers that are in that hallway on the top of the wall. The third floor is usually where the social studies and science classes are. The first floor is usually where  foreign language, business, culinary, health, P.E, and band classes are. The second floor is the “T”. If you are looking at it from the entrance doors, the right is where the math classes usually are. To the left is the English hallway. Then if you go straight, more math classes, choir, and theater classes are there. The big gym and the auditorium are also down this hallway. The small gym is on the first floor under the big one.

To be on time you should go straight to class. A lot of people hang out in the “T” and that’s okay, but if I were you I wouldn’t unless I am right next to my class. Usually if you really want to talk, do it while you are walking. If you need to use the restroom, do it fast. Sometimes you can go to class first and ask your teacher if you can go. If you don’t have time, and really need to go, you can wait until 15 minutes into class and make an ehallpass. If you have to stay in class for a while after the bell rings, your teacher can probably write you a pass. That will help prevent tardiness.

Lunch is a little different in high school. You walk yourself there and can sit wherever you want. You can also have your phone out when in the cafeteria. Lunch is in your 5th hour. There are 4 shifts. On the first day of the school right before 5th hour they call over the intercom and say the teachers that have first lunch. If you hear your 5th hour teacher you go to lunch when the bell rings. If not, go to class. If you didn’t hear, then ask your teacher. I accidentally went to the wrong shift one of the first days. The rest of 5th hour the teacher will tell you when your lunch is. Lunch is dismissed with the bell and you go to lunch with the bell. If you have 4th lunch make sure you bring all your stuff and go to your next class. If you have the other shifts, then go back to your 5th hour. At lunch you have to get a fruit, veggie, or juice. Then you can get other things.

That is all of my advice. I hope this helps you feel more comfortable going to a new school. Navigating the building will get easier as you keep on coming and getting used to it. You do great at this school!
